I feel like the back design went rather smoothly and there is not much I would like to add to it, apart from a drop shadow on the “Trump playing card” box what would make it look more realistic. I like the simplicity of this design and how I have used a majority of the colour scheme what links the two sides nicely, the back of the card also ties in with the art movement in style and subject matter as well as the card premise with the use of the american flag and the satirical trump branding playing into my personal ideas and dada ideas.
Much like for the content holding boxes on the front of my card I used the pen tool to create a basic flag design, again my colour scheme to colour them and using the roughen tool to make each stripe look like it was a piece of paper ripped out. What I thought looked very effective on my front design, and could like the two (back and front) together.
Next I moved onto making the suits what would replace the stars, much like the suits on the front of my card design, using a graphics tablet I drew out all four symbals using the blog tool and colour them in a frantic and messy style, to like back to the front design (mainly the bald eagle) Then I lined them up into a pattern row so no of the same two suits would touch and placed them over the blue box.
Aftering doing this the flag looked way to plan and generic and did not really match my artist movement, so I looked back at my front design to see what worked and if there was anything I could re-use or bring over stylisticly. One of the main elements I liked from the front design was the mix match patchwork style “King” text on the lower half of the page. I had the idea the idea early to add some satrical and false trump in this style.
Looking now at my front design, what has included more text and typography than originally intended and looking on how much time I have left I am going to make the back a lot more simplistic, but keep the flag idea,
To do this I will instead be using standard strips (but roughen and daged to match the front of the card) instead of the quotes. And adding the 4 different suits where the stars are on the flag.
After adding the text and applying the peer review ideas to my design I was pretty much done. All I had to do was add the pointillize effect and I was done… after waiting 10 minutes for it to render out and another 10 for it to save I have my finished design!
Also to note the pointillize effect effect on the “Make America” text make it so the orange “Great” was hardly visible so it had to be changed to the background off white colour
I’m really like this design, I feel as if I have done the: Brief, the art movement, and my idea all justice. Everything turned out well and there is only one thing that I would add, what is a drop shadow. However this idea ha to be scraped due to a lack of time due to poor time management. This would of added, in my option a great realistic feeling and make it look just a bit better. This would have been done by copying the content holding rectangles and making them the darker shade (from my colour scheme) putting them behind there respected layouts and moving them up a few pixels then use a blur effect on them.
Other than that I feel like this poster has everything else, A lot of vairent and unique type what grap the eye, especially the “Trump Wins” what was placed at an angle and coloured in red to graps the views and give some idea about what this piece is about. The same can be said about the jamie read inspired “King” where I used a mix of fonts to create this, your eye is instantly drawn into by the italic san serif K and leads you across the bag to the bald eagle. This is rather useful as the eagle at first glance could come off as just a point less scribble. However with you’re eye naturally falling on it you’re able to anaylise and discover what it is, due to the more detailed shapes. The colour choices I choose for the mid portion mainly the orange hair, what is Synonymous now with Trump and will reinforce the point that it is Donald J Trump. The colour, again were also draw a viewer in and will make make them study the piece especially the puppet like head, this angular style flat head Much like the “trump wins” text Will grab the viewers I due to it dynamic placing.
I am making this post because I just found a game changer!
While playing around with the effect tools I clicked on one called “Pointillize”.
From what I can tell it turns flat colour into small dots of different colour, making the selected element look like craft paper… Why didn’t I know about this sooner?! It has made my piece look like a real dadaist piece… However it makes the Mac super slow so I can’t edit elements, so will have to add it last… and thats why i’m making this post, to remember to add Pointillize!
In class today we all went around as a group, computer to computer, to look at everyone work and give ideas on what each person should do to there work.
My work, was not yet finished and had a few areas mainly on the lower part of the card design what where empty and I did not know what to add, so wanted some help and ideas on what to add.
There seemed to be a bit of confusing about what type of card it was, The King or The Joker… what was quite funny and scary to imagine the next american president to be seen as a clown before he got into office. It seemed my “King of the free world” did not clearly show them and I was suggested to add a “K” or king to the card, a criticism I had when pitching my idea in class for my old design. They also thought there was a lot of negative space what need to be filled what I agree with.
After these Ideas I had the idea of adding in a blurb or full news paper clipping in the style of hannah hoch in the lower part of my card. also to use the pink lower box to show the work “King” in jamie reid style ransom note text. using different font types for each letter.
Looking at the current state of my front side card, all I need to add is text.
the “Trump is elected” was from a screenshot that I had collected for research, and thought would work nicely in my piece. The idea was to just re-type out the phrase, however I knew what else I was going to add and knew that there would be alot of typed text using the text tool. So instead I placed the image into my work and image traced it, what I know would distort and mess it up slightly. However I wanted this to happen so it stood out, looking at it know it makes me feel that this piece of text is older, as if the piece was made a few years from now and that this is a real news paper clipping but it have just been ripped and messed up. what works well with not only the art style but the vintage colour scheme.
For trumps now Infamous catchphrase “Make America Great Again” I looked online to see all of the Iconic hats and other merchandise to see if I could recognise the font style used on the hats, I also googled it question and found out that it was just generic times new Roman. Every common and basic sans-serif. With this knowledge I went back on to illustrator and use the type tool to type out the catch phrase, scaling it up to fit the content box that I have already created. Then I went into options Type, and created an outline and ungrouped the phrase into separate groups of each word. Make this text more dynamic and to stand out I placed each word at a different angle I also change the great to Orange to make it stand out. Also adding quotation marks around the word great to imply that America has always been great to some extent and that the catchphrase was unneeded and pointless
Now that all of my main text was added in I had a play around with a graphics table and different types of text and designed this “exhibit commander in chief” text, I have desided to include this as I feel like it renforses the idea that the images and text are just re purposed from a real world future text book talking about trumps presidency
Now that I have decided to restart my design I have also decided to look at some more artest to hopefully get some ideas for my card…
Like the hannah hoch, Raoul Hausmann is a dada artist what uses photomontage collages (as well as other mediums) however His focus on large works and typography (like Hoch, from newspaper clippings) is something I feel like I can re-purpose for my card design.
He also uses a similar colour scheme as Hoch what is something I especially like about her work and also his.
Another artist I looked out with dash snow, he is not a dadaist however his work is politically charged and he uses a photo montage style collage to his pieces often using large figures in American politics such as Ronald Reagan.
Alex knows use of the photo montage style what is different to dadaism, how are they still politically charged like the dadaists. Especially like the large photos that he uses in his pieces what is something I may want to add to mine.
After looking at these artists and going back to the office I’ve previously researched like Jean arp I have a new idea for what my card design will look like and believe it is something that will be easily made in Adobe Illustrator.
What are my main ideas afford this new card design was inclusion of a bald eagle stamp what you often see in classified American documents corporation of this stamp slash logo was too remind and reinforce the point that Trump is now the leader of the biggest country / superpower in the world and he will now be able to see all of this classified information what could greatly affect the entire world.
Also the bald eagle is iconically American and is a symbol of free speech and safety and arguably piece what ideas that haven’t been shown buy trump and I think is a good counter balance especially if the two of us next together as it shows freedom and what could be a pressure side by side.
To make the bird I looked online for documents logos and government branches that use a bald eagle and use the pencil again to create one similar. How is that it was not symmetrical and did not look good like this, but I knew that time was running out and I needed a way to easily fix this looking back at my sketchbook and the ideas that I had I knew I wanted to incorporate a more rustic realistic feeling like the piece was from the real world and not digital. One idea I had played around with was to use Mark making Style sketch design, the first time I did this was for the diamond however while playing around in the effects tab in illustrator I saw a tool called scribble, what emulator this effect and the made the bird look more rustic and a lot better than it did without this effect on. However the scribble made the face unrecognisable so like the face design I copied the original pen drawing and use the lighter scribble effect on a to make the face more clear and pasted the new face design on the bird.
